At Fighting Pretty, we believe in the power of visualization and setting intentions - whether you're fighting cancer, supporting someone who is, or simply fighting for your dreams. When we see ourselves succeeding, we're already halfway there. Keep fighting pretty, and remember: you have the strength to create the future you envision.
As the new year approaches, I find myself drawn to one of my favorite holiday traditions: taking time to reflect on the past year and dream about what's ahead. There's something magical about this season that invites us to pause, breathe, and imagine our best possible future.
One practice that has transformed my goal-setting is visualization. But I don't just picture my goals in my mind - I write them down as if they've already happened. While visualization requires consistent practice, putting accomplished goals into writing makes them feel tangible and real. Each year (and sometimes each season), I write a letter to a friend or my future self, filled with all the details of my accomplished dreams.
Here's the flow that guides my process:
Dream without judgment.
I start by allowing myself to dream and desire freely, writing down everything that comes to mind without censoring or doubting.
Say YES to what matters.
Next, I clarify what I'm saying yes to creating and cultivating this year or season—and equally important, what I'm saying no to. Writing both lists helps me focus my energy.
Choose what calls to you.
Looking at my list, I notice what stands out, what calls to me strongest, and which goals align with the future version of myself. (Remember: you are perfect as you are and don't need fixing—this is about growth, not correction.) I select a few that I truly want for myself.
Visualize the journey.
I see myself accomplishing these goals, imagining how I've grown to achieve them, how I needed to show up, and what routines I created to stay on track.
Share your success story.
Finally, I write a letter or email to a friend as though everything has already happened. Here's a peek at my own letter for 2026:
Hey Girl,
What a year it's been! We launched our oldest child into university - what a feat that was! However, I'm most proud of leaning back into myself and rediscovering what lights me up.
I climbed Mt. St. Helens in early summer, and the view was spectacular! I'm glad I got serious about training; it made the climb much more enjoyable. I also returned to dancing - I found this great instructor online, and even the girls learn the routines with me. It's so much fun!
And finally, you may be surprised (I'm still a little in shock myself), but I got comfortable enough in front of a camera to share my passion and build a community online supporting women to LIVE life, not just go through the motions. It took courage, faith, and a few tears (some from laughing at the outtakes), but I'm so glad I did it and cannot wait for what 2027 holds.
Love you and thank you for all your unending support!
Try this practice for yourself—have some fun with it! You don't actually have to send the letter to anyone. Writing it is the beginning of turning thought into reality.
May 2026 be filled with joy, peace, and the courage to fight for your dreams!
Love, Wendy
